DATE AND LOCATION OF EXPERIMENT: 1971, STANFORD UNIVERSITY, DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING. 5. ABSTRACT: THIS EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM WAS CARRIED OUT ON THE STANFORD UNIVERSITY HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER APPARATUS WHICH ALLOWS ACCURATE CONTROL OF THE LONGITUDINAL PRESSURE GRADIENT AND OF THE INJECTION MASS FLOW RATE. THE INVESTIGATION WAS LIMITED TO LOW SPEEDS (U = 10 M/S) WITH AIR AS THE TRANSPIRATION FLUID. IN THE MAIN THE RESULTS FOR VELOCITY PROFILES WERE OBTAINED BY USE OF CONSTANT TEMPERATURE HOT WIRES AND AN IMPORTANT FEATURE OF THE WORK WAS THE MEASUREMENT OF SKIN FRICTION. THIS WAS OBTAINED BY MEASURING THE REYNOLDS STRESS AT A POINT CLOSE TO THE WALL AND THEN USING MEAN FLOW VEL- OCITIES BETWEEN THAT POINT AND THE WALL, TOGETHER WITH THE EQUATIONS OF MOTION, TO EVALUATE THE WALL SKIN FRICTION. RESULTS WERE OBTAINED FOR A WIDE RANGE OF INJECTION AND SUCTION RATES IN A SERIES OF EQUILIBRIUM LAYERS. CHECKS BY THE OVERALL MOMENTUM INTEGRAL EQUATION HAVE SHOWN THAT THE LAYERS ARE CLOSELY TWO- DIMENSIONAL. THIS TEST CASE WAS CHOSEN AS A BASIC DATA SET FOR INJECTION WITHOUT THE COMPLICATION OF PRESSURE GRADIENT, YET WITH AN INJECTION RATE WHICH WAS SUFFICIENTLY LARGE TO PRODUCE A SIGNIFICANT EFFECT ON THE BOUNDARY LAYER PROFILES. 6. EXPERIMENTAL PARAMETERS: THE TESTS WERE CONDUCTED AT VELOCITIES OF ABOUT 10 M/S IN A TEST SECTION 2.3 M LONG AND 0.5 M WIDE. THE ACTUAL HEIGHT WAS ABOUT 0.15 M. THE TEST SURFACE CONSISTED OF 24 SECTIONS OF POROUS PLATES WITH A SEPARATE MASS-FLOW CONTROL ON EACH. THE PLATES WERE 0.006 M THICK AND WERE MADE OF SINTERED BRONZE MATERIAL COMPOSED OF PARTICLES WITH DIAMETERS BETWEEN 0.000058 M AND 0.000018 M. THE POROSITY AND FLOW RATE UNIFORMITY IS STATED TO BE WITHIN +/- 6%, KINEMATIC VISCOSITY, XNU = 1.54 E-5 METER**2/SECOND. 9. MEASURED AND INFERRED VARIABLES: X STREAMWISE COORDINATE, M.
