ABSTRACT OF EXPERIMENT: THE TUNNEL WAS OPERATED WITH THE WORKING SECTION ROOF REMOVED, THE SIDE WALLS EXTENDED IN HEIGHT, AND A VERTICAL PLATE 1.3 M IN HEIGHT AND 0.762 M WIDE INSTALLED 0.447 M DOWNSTREAM OF THE CONTRACTION EXIT. THE TUNNEL STREAM IS THUS TURNED THROUGH A NOMINAL 90 DEGREES TO FLOW VERTICALLY UP THE PLATE, AND THE MIXING LAYER FORMED BETWEEN THE TOP OF THE TUNNEL STREAM AND "STILL AIR" ALSO TURNS THROUGH A NOMINAL 90 DEGREES. BOUNDARY LAYER SEPARATION IN THE RIGHT-ANGLED CORNER BETWEEN THE FLOOR AND THE BACKPLATE IS PREVENTED BY ALLOWING A VOLUME OF AIR EQUAL TO A 0.04 M THICKNESS OF THE TUNNEL EXIT STREAM TO ESCAPE THROUGH A GAP IN THE CORNER. THE SENSE OF THE CURVATURE TENDS TO STABILIZE THE TURBULENCE IN THE MIXING LAYER. MEASUREMENTS OF MOST OF THE SECOND AND THIRD ORDER ONE-POINT MEAN PRODUCTS OF VELOCITY FLUCTUATIONS WERE TAKEN WITH HOT-WIRE ANEMOMETERS, AND PITOT PROFILES WERE ALSO MEASURED. A FEW SPECTRA WERE MEASURED AND ARE PRESENTED IN REF. 1. THE MAIN SOURCE OF DERIVED DATA IS REF. 2, IN WHICH RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN TRANSFORMED COORDINATES TO SHOW UP DEPARTURES FROM SELF-PRESERVATION AS CLEARLY AS POSSIBLE. THE COORDINATE SYSTEM USED FOR DEFINING POSITION AND RESOLVING VELOCITY IS DIFFERENT IN THE CURVED AND VERTICAL PORTIONS OF THE MIXING LAYER. IN THE CURVED PORTION, POLAR COORDINATES ARE USED, WITH AN ORIGIN 0.126 M DOWNSTREAM OF THE NOZZLE EXIT AND 0.251 M ABOVE THE UPPER LIP OF THE NOZZLE (0.378 M ABOVE THE FLOOR). IN THE VERTICAL PORTION, RECTANGULAR COORDINATES ARE USED, THE ORIGIN OF THE VERTICAL COORDINATE, X, BEING THE PLANE OF THE UPPER LIP OF THE NOZZLE WHILE THE OTHER HORIZONTAL COORDINATE, Y, IS MEASURED NORMAL LEFTWARD FROM THE BACKPLATE. GIVEN BELOW IS THE RADIUS RREF OF A REFERENCE STREAMLINE IN THE POTENTIAL FLOW (CURVED PORTION ONLY). THE YAW CALIBRATIONS WERE EXPRESSED AS THE APPARENT ANGLE BETWEEN THE WIRE AND THE STREAM, DEDUCED BY ASSUMING THAT THE WIRE OBEYED THE COSINE LAW: THIS IS A MORE ACCURATE PROCEDURE THAN INSERTING THE GEOMETRICAL ANGLE INTO THE COSINE LAW, AND AVOIDS ANY ASSUMPTION ABOUT THE "CROSSFLOW FACTOR" K. THE ANEMOMETER OUTPUTS WERE RECORDED ON ANALOG MAGNETIC TAPES AND LATER TRANSFERRED TO DIGITAL MAGTAPE FOR PROCESSING, INCLUDING LINEARIZATION, ON THE MAIN COLLEGE COMPUTER.
