ABSTRACT: THE CASE INCLUDES MEAN-VELOCITY PROFILES, PRESSURE COEFFICIENT PROFILES, WALL STATIC PRESSURE AND TURBULENCE DATA FOR THE FLOW OVER A BACKWARD FACING STEP. THE EXPERIMENT WAS CONDUCTED IN A PARALLEL WALLED, SUDDEN EXPANSION, AIR FLOW. A STRAIGHT DUCT 0.0762 M WIDE AND 0.3048 M LONG WAS PLACED UPSTREAM OF THE 0.0381 M STEP TO ALLOW A TURBULENT BOUNDARY LAYER TO DEVELOP UPSTREAM OF SEPARATION. THE LENGTH OF THE DUCT DOWNSTREAM OF THE STEP IS 2.34 M. THE WALLS ARE FAR ENOUGH APART TO INSURE THE EXISTENCE OF A POTENTIAL CORE AND TO INSURE THAT THE OPPOSITE WALL BOUNDARY LAYER DOES NOT INTERFERE WITH THE RECOVERING BOUNDARY LAYER. HOT WIRE ANEMOMETERS WERE USED TO MAKE THE TURBULENCE MEASUREMENTS IN THE BOUNDARY LAYER DOWNSTREAM OF REATTACHMENT. THE REFERENCE VELOCITY WAS HELD AT A CONSTANT VALUE OF 18.2 M/S AT X = -.125 M. THE PRESSURE COEFFICIENT PROFILES WERE DIGITIZED FROM GRAPHS USING A HOUSTON INSTRUMENTS HI-PAD.
